Where academic PV research meets the Cyprus sun
Eletoyia is the only PV installer in Cyprus running an active research programme — funded by European and national sources, embedded with the University of Cyprus, and feeding directly into what we install on your roof.
EU and national research projects
Since 2010, Dr. Yiannis Tofis and the Eletoyia team have led or partnered on multiple Horizon Europe and Cypriot Research Foundation projects. Focus areas include grid stability with high PV penetration, fault detection algorithms, and lifecycle testing of modules in Mediterranean climates. Findings feed straight into the equipment shortlist and the O&M protocols we use commercially — so a customer's installation benefits from the same knowledge that goes into peer-reviewed papers.
AI-based monitoring and soiling detection
Our engineers have developed machine-learning models that ingest the per-string production data every Eletoyia system reports and flag anomalies faster than a human operator can. The most valuable class of anomaly is soiling: dust film losses in Cyprus routinely exceed 5% between rainfalls, and our models detect the onset weeks before a human would notice on the app. When soiling exceeds a threshold, the system schedules a clean automatically.
Blockchain-based energy trading
In partnership with the University of Cyprus we have prototyped a blockchain-based peer-to-peer energy trading platform, tested in a residential microgrid setting. The project explores how Cyprus's net-billing framework could evolve to reward community-scale energy sharing — a policy direction the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority has publicly signalled interest in.
A dedicated PV research lab
We are currently building Cyprus's first dedicated photovoltaic research laboratory. Planned capabilities include solar flashing devices for module characterisation, environmental chambers for accelerated lifetime testing under Cyprus-realistic UV and thermal cycling, and a chemistry bench for exploring next-generation cells — from silicon-perovskite tandems to fully organic modules. The lab underwrites our long-term equipment recommendations; every panel we install is a panel we can, in principle, test to failure.
